Simpler is better.
That was the case for the Chester Children’s Chorus — their staff was struggling with an overly complicated website created by someone who was no longer living in the area. I was hired to clean up the resulting mess. Together, we decided that a full redesign of the site would be the best long-term solution to their ongoing problems.
A full redesign was a particularly attractive option because the organization’s existing website design was cramped and visually dense. The color choices in the navigation design also prevented any effective use of color photographs. In effect, the previous design was distracting parents and supporters from learning about the chorus’ activities.
To address these concerns, I created a much simpler design to highlight their logo and photos. I also trained the organization’s administrative assistant to use a software program supplied by Swarthmore College to edit content in the new site. After a couple years of use, this new solution has given them the confidence to ask me about adding new features to their site, including multimedia clips from selected performances. But even as the chorus looks forward to that future, they still think my original solution is simply “amazing!”
